Pioneering Nucleic Acid Innovation Since 1997
In 1997, at the height of Germany's biotechnology boom, Dr. Sylvia Wojczewski and Dr. Hüseyin Aygün, students at Goethe University in Frankfurt, embarked on an ambitious journey. With a vision to revolutionize the production of nucleic acids, they pooled their savings and purchased a DNA synthesizer. This marked the birth of BioSpring, which began operations in a small lab, under the mentorship of Professor Joachim Engels, a pioneering figure in nucleic acid research.
From these modest beginnings, BioSpring quickly gained momentum. Relocating to Frankfurt-Fechenheim in 2000 allowed the company to begin large-scale manufacturing in 2001. By 2007, BioSpring became the first European oligonucleotide manufacturer to receive the coveted cGMP certification for the manufacturing of therapeutic oligonucleotides. With the implementation of the world’s first Next Generation OligoProcess Synthesizer in 2013, a new standard for large scale synthesis was set and BioSpring successfully passed their first FDA inspection in 2016. In 2022, BioSpring expanded into non-GMP mRNA manufacturing, followed by achieving cGMP certification for mRNA manufacturing in 2024. To date, BioSpring has provided support for six commercially launched oligonucleotide therapeutics.
Over the years, we have become internationally recognized as a leader in nucleic acid technology, serving clients around the world and we continue to grow. Our expansion plans include a new campus in Offenbach, creating 1,500 jobs and reinforcing our position as a "one-stop-shop" for nucleic acid-based medicines. With a subsidiary in the U.S. and partnership in Japan, we have become Europe’s largest manufacturer of synthetic DNA and RNA, and the world leader in guide RNA production for genome editing technologies.
This incredible journey highlights the vision and determination of our founders, who believed in the transformative power of nucleic acids early on. Today, we are proud to be at the forefront of biotechnological advancements, helping to shape the medicine of tomorrow.
